Standard fibre optic tails deliver light and colour. The TFH Textured Light Spray delivers light, colour, and texture — simultaneously. Each of the 12 knotted bamboo-effect strands is wrapped in a sheathing with a knobbly, 'knotted' outer surface that users can feel as they hold, comb, braid, and explore the tails. This tactile dimension is what makes the Textured Light Spray a distinct product rather than simply a thicker version of a standard fibre optic spray. Available across North America from The Sensory Supply, with the sparkle light source included, it brings a multi-sensory tactile-and-visual experience that standard smooth-tail fibre optics cannot offer.
The jumbo thick diameter of the individual strands serves two purposes. The wider tail body gives a wider pin of light at the tip, making the light easier to see — a meaningful benefit for users with low vision. And the larger surface area of each strand means more contact between the tail and the user's skin, hand, or arm, delivering richer tactile feedback from each interaction. The bamboo-effect sheathing also makes the tails more robust and easier to grip and handle than standard thin fibre optic strands, which is particularly relevant for therapy settings where users of varying motor skill levels access the equipment daily.
The Sparkle Light Source is included with this product, so the kit is complete out of the box. Tail length is 2 metres per strand.
Key Features of the TFH Textured Light Spray
- 12 Knotted Bamboo-Effect Fibre Optic Tails - 12 individual strands, each wrapped in a knobbly bamboo-effect outer sheathing that delivers tactile stimulation through texture alongside the light and colour of the fibre optic core — a dual-sensory experience from a single strand
- Jumbo Thick Diameter for Low-Vision Accessibility - The larger diameter of each tail produces a wider pin of light at the tip, making the light easier to see and track; a meaningful advantage for individuals with low vision or visual processing differences compared to standard fine-diameter fibre optic tails
-
2 Metres Per Tail - Each strand is 2 metres long, long enough to pool, drape, or arrange across a user's lap, body, or play surface for full tactile and visual immersion
- Bamboo-Effect Sheathing for Robust Handling - The knotted outer sheathing makes the tails significantly more durable and easier to grip than standard thin-fibre tails, supporting regular daily use in therapy settings and sensory rooms where multiple users access the equipment
- Glows Under UV Light - The tails are reactive under UV light, adding a UV glow effect in sensory rooms or spaces equipped with UV lighting for an additional visual stimulation dimension
- Compatible with Existing TFH Sensory Rooms - The tails use a standard TFH light source fitting and can be used to swap out or update existing fibre optic tails in any TFH multi-sensory room installation
- Tactile Discrimination & Proprioceptive Benefit - The texture of the knotted sheathing provides tactile discrimination input as users feel and identify the knots along the length of each tail, supporting tactile processing alongside the visual and proprioceptive benefits of handling the weighted strands

The Tactile Case for Knotted Fibre Optic Tails
A key challenge in sensory room design is providing tactile input that is genuinely interesting and varied — not just soft or smooth surfaces, but surfaces with distinct textures that give the nervous system something meaningful to process. The knotted sheathing of the Textured Light Spray provides exactly this: a repeating tactile pattern along each strand that users can locate, follow with their fingers, and distinguish from other surfaces by touch alone.
For OTs working on tactile discrimination programs, the combination of texture, light, and weight in a single manipulable object opens a wide range of purposeful activity options — identifying knots by touch, using the strands as part of a sensory brush protocol, or simply allowing the weighted glow of the tails resting across the arms and lap to provide the regulatory input that makes fibre optic sprays a sensory room staple.
Skills Developed Through Use
- Tactile Discrimination - Feeling and locating the knotted pattern along the sheathing develops the ability to distinguish texture by touch, a foundational skill in tactile processing and daily living independence
- Fine Motor Skills - Holding, braiding, threading, and manipulating 12 thick individual strands develops hand strength, pinch grip, and precise finger control
- Visual Tracking & Colour Recognition - Following the light from the base of each strand to the glowing tip, and observing colour transitions across the spray, supports visual tracking and colour recognition development
- Motor Planning - Selecting individual strands, arranging them across a surface, or threading them through objects requires sequencing and spatial planning, supporting motor planning skill development
- Self-Regulation - The combination of weighted tactile input from the strands resting on the body, the calming colour-changing light, and the repetitive stroking or braiding action creates a naturally regulating sensory environment
Ideal For
- OTs and therapists using tactile discrimination activities in sensory integration programmes
- Sensory rooms where a more robust, textured alternative to standard fibre optic tails is needed for heavy-use settings
- Users with low vision or visual processing differences who benefit from a wider, brighter light pin at the tail tip
- Families and home sensory spaces where tactile-rich, visually engaging sensory play is the goal
- Any setting where standard thin fibre optic tails are too fine for users to manipulate comfortably
- Tail count: 12 knotted bamboo-effect tails
- Tail length: 2 metres per strand
- Light source: Sparkle light source with colour-changing capabilities (sold separately)
- UV reactive: Yes - tails glow under UV light
