Take Full Platform Swing Therapy Anywhere with the Southpaw Itinerant Swing

Description

A platform swing is one of the most clinically versatile pieces of OT equipment available - but traditionally, it has been tethered to a permanently mounted ceiling bolt and a fixed therapy space. The Southpaw Itinerant Platform Swing changes that. At just 11 lbs and 30 inches in diameter, it is built specifically for occupational therapists who work across multiple locations: school-based OTs moving between classrooms and buildings, itinerant therapists serving home and community settings, and mobile practitioners across North America who need genuine clinical capability without the constraint of a permanent installation.

Available from The Sensory Supply, the Itinerant Platform Swing is sold with your choice of carpet or vinyl seat padding - each attached with Velcro for easy swap or replacement - and comes with its own dedicated carrying case so it is always transport-ready between sessions.

Portable Design Built Around Real Clinical Workflow

The swing is designed to fit the Southpaw Itinerant Support Frame (sold separately), making it the platform swing companion for any travelling therapist who uses the ITN Frame system. When you arrive at a new location, the Safety Snap attaches directly to the swivel eye bolt at the top of the frame and the welded ring on the ropes slides up to lock in place - setup is fast, secure, and repeatable.

Two removable wooden spreader bars are included. These clip onto the ropes via lynch pin clips and expand the space inside the rope configuration, giving larger clients more comfortable room within the swing. When they are not needed, they come off just as quickly. When storing or transporting the swing, the welded ring slides down over the ropes to keep everything bundled cleanly inside the carrying case.

Key Features of the Southpaw Itinerant Platform Swing

  • Lightweight at 11 lbs - Keeps the total load manageable for a single therapist to carry between sessions, so the swing travels without becoming a logistical obstacle in a busy school or community caseload.
  • 30" diameter platform - Provides a generous, stable surface for a range of client positions - prone, seated, kneeling, or side-lying - giving therapists the same positional versatility they would expect from a full clinic platform swing.
  • Velcro-attached seat padding - Available in carpet or vinyl, with both options attaching and detaching via Velcro so the pad can be replaced or upgraded without replacing the whole swing. A vinyl replacement pad is also available separately.
  • Removable wooden spreader bars with lynch pin clips - Expand the rope configuration to accommodate larger clients comfortably, and remove cleanly when a tighter configuration better suits the session or the client.
  • Dedicated carrying case included - Keeps the swing and all components organised and protected between locations so that nothing is misplaced across a multi-site caseload.
  • One Safety Snap included - The safety connection hardware ships with the swing so the swing is ready to use with the ITN Frame from day one.
  • Total hanging height of 7'3" - Provides appropriate clearance for a range of client and therapy positions within the ITN Frame system.
  • Made in the USA - Manufactured by Southpaw Enterprises to the quality and durability standards expected of professional OT equipment.

Vestibular Input, Postural Control, and Balance - in Any Setting

The platform swing is one of the most effective tools in a sensory integration toolkit precisely because it delivers vestibular input across multiple planes of movement and supports so many different client positions. In the prone position, it activates back extensors, challenges postural control, and loads the proprioceptive system. In seated positions, it develops core stability, spatial awareness, and balance responses. For clients working on sensory regulation as part of a broader sensory diet, the predictable, controlled movement of a platform swing is often a foundational activity.

What the Itinerant Platform Swing adds to all of this is access. A child receiving school-based OT in a classroom without a ceiling mount, a client being seen in a community centre, a family receiving home visits - all of them can now experience full platform swing therapy in a properly supervised session, using the same clinical-grade Southpaw equipment found in specialist clinic environments. That is not a small thing. For many itinerant therapists, the ability to bring this level of vestibular input to their full caseload - rather than only to clients who have access to a fixed clinic - changes what is possible in a session.

Carpet or Vinyl - Choosing the Right Padding

Carpet padding offers comfortable traction and is a familiar surface for clients who may be tactile-sensitive about smooth materials. It is vacuumed for regular cleaning and can be refreshed with foam carpet cleaner; it is not machine washable.

Vinyl padding offers a smooth, cleanable surface that can be wiped with a prescribed disinfectant, making it a practical choice for clinical environments where infection control protocols apply. Always check with your infectious disease department before applying cleaning products, and check for client allergies before use.

Both padding types are held in place with Velcro and can be replaced with the ITN Platform Swing Replacement Pad, available separately.

Ideal for Itinerant OTs, School-Based Therapists, Home Visitors, and Community Practitioners

The Southpaw Itinerant Platform Swing is the right choice for any therapist whose caseload takes them beyond the walls of a fixed clinic. It is equally well suited to paediatric sensory integration programmes in school settings, early intervention home visits, community-based therapy delivery, and as a portable backup swing for clinics that occasionally need swing access in multiple rooms simultaneously. Families working with OTs on home therapy programmes will also find it a practical choice where ceiling installation is not possible or desired.

Note: The ITN Platform Swing is designed for indoor use only and must always be used under proper supervision.
