Therapeutic Balance & Sensory Integration Swing for Kids, Families & OT Clinics Across North America

Description

The Southpaw Moon Ball Swing turns every session - whether in an OT clinic, a home sensory room, or a school therapy space across North America - into a genuinely engaging movement experience. Hanging from a single suspension point, the swing combines the natural arc of a classic therapy swing with the responsive bounce of a 55cm therapy ball seated in a fabric-spring sling. That combination is unusual, and deliberately so: it means the child or client is never just swinging - they are navigating three-dimensional motion, adapting their posture in real time, and building body awareness in a way that's difficult to replicate with separate equipment.

This is a product occupational therapists reach for when they want combined vestibular and proprioceptive input in a single setup. The controlled bouncing and vertical movement stimulate the vestibular system while the postural demands of maintaining balance on the ball surface engage proprioceptive processing simultaneously. For clinicians working on sensory integration, flexion and extension patterns, or postural regulation, the Moon Ball Swing opens up a range of activities that progress from gentle floor-level use to full suspension - adjustable to suit where each client is on any given day.

For families, it is simply a swing that does something different. The soft, comforting shape invites imaginative play. The bounce is genuinely joyful. And because it can be hung indoors or outdoors, it earns its place in a home sensory room, a back garden, or a garage therapy corner without needing a permanent dedicated structure.

Key Features of the Southpaw Moon Ball Swing

  • 55cm Therapy Ball Base - A full-size therapy ball built into the swing's sling provides the familiar resistance and bounce of a therapy ball session, allowing for controlled vertical movement and postural adjustments throughout use
  • Fabric-Covered Spring Sling - The five-foot sling cradles the ball within fabric springs so the entire system bounces responsively when the user rocks or shifts weight, adding spatial and balance challenges beyond what a standard swing provides
  • Vestibular and Proprioceptive Input in a Single Setup - Because the swing moves in multiple planes while the ball surface requires constant postural adaptation, both sensory systems receive input simultaneously - making this a high-value tool within an OT sensory diet
  • Floor-Level Use Option - The swing can be lowered to the ground so clients can work on posture, balance, and extension exercises on a rotation-controlled therapy ball surface without being airborne - useful for building confidence before progressing to full suspension
  • Soft Moon-Shaped Design - The gentle, inviting shape is approachable for young children and those who may be cautious about movement equipment, encouraging engagement and relaxation in equal measure
  • Indoor and Outdoor Versatility - Designed for use in therapy rooms, sensory rooms, home play spaces, and outdoor settings, the Moon Ball Swing adapts to the installation environment rather than requiring a dedicated space
  • Single Suspension Point Installation - Hangs from one ceiling anchor point, simplifying installation compared to multi-point swings while still supporting a working load of 200 lbs
  • Quick Setup - Designed for straightforward installation so the swing is ready for use without prolonged assembly or specialist fitting
  • Southpaw Safety Rotational Device Compatible - Engineered to be used with Southpaw's Safety Rotational Device (recommended, sold separately), which enables safe rotation and movement in all directions for maximum therapeutic flexibility

Balance, Postural Strength & Motor Development Through Movement

The movement demands of the Moon Ball Swing support several interconnected developmental areas. Maintaining a seated or kneeling position on the suspended therapy ball challenges core strength and bilateral coordination in ways that flat-surface swings cannot. Flexion, extension, and postural adjustment activities - whether guided by an OT or explored freely - build the muscle tone and body schema awareness that underpin gross motor development and daily physical function. For children working on sensory regulation, the rhythmic, self-directed quality of the bounce adds a calming, organising quality to the sensory input.

Important Note For Use:

  • All Southpaw Swings are highly recommended to be used with a minimum of 1 Southpaw Safety Rotational Device. For swings with more than 1 anchor point, it's highly recommended to use 1 Southpaw Safety Rotation Device for each anchor point for maximum flexibility of use.
  • Note that all Southpaw Safety Rotation Devices come with 1 Southpaw Safety Snap, but the purchase of a 2nd is required to connect it to the swing safely.
