The Experia IRiS Balance Beam is an IRiS Talker — a wireless controller in the Experia IRiS system — where the user's footsteps along an 87"L x 44"W x 22"H balance beam are the control mechanism, available across North America. Walk along the beam and step on any of the 8 brightly coloured sections; each section sends a wireless signal that changes the colour of every connected IRiS Listener in the room — a bubble tube, a fibre optic bundle, an infinity tunnel, or any other IRiS Listener the room contains.
The balance beam and the sensory room become one experience. The user is not pressing a button or rolling a cube to change the room's colour — they are walking a balance beam, and their position on it, their choice of which section to step on, is what controls the light around them. At 87" long with 8 distinct colour sections, the beam provides enough length for sustained balancing practice while offering 8 points of colour-change interaction across its length.
The 8 coloured sections serve as progress indicators as well as colour controllers. Colour can be used to mark progress points along the beam — a useful structure for charting balance development over time, setting goals by section colour, or guiding motor planning through a sequence of colour targets.
The Balance Beam is completely wireless and battery-powered (battery included). It requires at least one IRiS Listener device to control — a bubble tube, fibre optic bundle, infinity tunnel, or any other compatible Listener. It is compatible with all existing IRiS Listener equipment and can be used alongside any other IRiS Talker in the same setup.
The beam is constructed from durable, easy-to-clean vinyl. Adult supervision required. Ages 3+. Made in the USA.
Key Features of the Experia IRiS Balance Beam
-
An IRiS Talker - Footsteps Control Any IRiS Listener Wirelessly - The Balance Beam is an IRiS Talker: stepping on any of the 8 coloured sections sends an immediate wireless signal to every connected IRiS Listener, changing their colour. The user's body movement along the beam is the controller.
-
8 Brightly Coloured Sections - Each Triggering a Different Colour Change - The beam's 8 sections are each a distinct colour, and stepping on each one triggers a corresponding colour change in all connected IRiS Listeners, giving users 8 colour-change points across the full 87-inch length of the beam.
-
Colour Sections as Progress Indicators for Balance Development - The 8 coloured sections provide a structured visual framework for tracking progress, setting session goals by colour sequence, and charting balance development over time — making the beam functional for both therapeutic goal-setting and active play.
-
87"L x 44"W x 22"H - Full-Length Balance Beam - At 87 inches long and 22 inches high, this is a full-length balance beam appropriate for sustained balancing practice across a range of age groups and ability levels.
-
Completely Wireless - Battery Included - The Balance Beam operates entirely wirelessly; no cables connect it to the IRiS Listeners it controls. Battery is included.
-
Durable, Easy-to-Clean Vinyl Construction - The beam is manufactured from strong, easy-to-clean vinyl appropriate for OT clinic, school, care facility, and sensory room environments.
-
Compatible with All IRiS Listeners - The beam can control any IRiS Listener in the Experia range — bubble tubes, fibre optic bundles, infinity tunnels, colour panels, and more — and can be used alongside any other IRiS Talker in the same setup simultaneously.
-
Requires at Least One IRiS Listener - The Balance Beam is an IRiS Talker and requires at least one IRiS Listener device to control. Suitable Listeners include any Experia IRiS bubble tube, fibre optic bundle, infinity tunnel, or other IRiS Listener.

Skills Developed Through the Experia IRiS Balance Beam
-
Balance and Postural Control - Walking across the 87-inch beam and stepping deliberately on specific sections develops dynamic balance, postural control, and weight-shifting skills — core vestibular and proprioceptive goals for OT and gross motor development.
-
Motor Planning - Selecting a specific coloured section to step on requires the user to plan their movement in advance and execute it with precision — intentional motor planning in a motivating cause-and-effect context.
-
Colour Recognition - The 8 distinct coloured sections and their corresponding colour changes in connected Listeners create a rich, full-body context for colour identification and discrimination.
-
Cause and Effect - Each deliberate step on a coloured section produces an immediate, visible environmental change — a powerful cause-and-effect reinforcement that motivates continued engagement with the beam and the sensory room simultaneously.
-
Sequencing and Cognitive Planning - Working through the beam in a specific colour sequence, or targeting particular sections to achieve a desired colour in the room, develops logical sequencing, planning, and goal-directed cognitive skills.
-
Social Interaction - The visible environmental change triggered by each step creates a natural context for shared engagement, turn-taking, and communication between a user on the beam and others watching the room respond.
Ideal for
- OT clinics and therapy spaces where balance training, motor planning, and proprioceptive input are primary therapeutic goals
- Sensory rooms adding an IRiS Talker that integrates gross motor activity with interactive colour control
- Schools, inclusive classrooms, and soft play environments where a full-length balance beam also controls the sensory room around it
- Existing Experia IRiS setups adding a body-movement-based Talker alongside button-press or tilt-based Talkers
- Children and adults of all abilities who benefit from the combination of balance challenge, colour-change cause and effect, and motor planning in a single activity
